July Is Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month
July is officially designated as Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month, a national health observance dedicated to shedding light on a condition that can affect up to 80% of women by the age of 50. Preferred Vascular Group offers uterine fibroid embolization as a highly successful treatment option for uterine fibroids — an outpatient procedure with shorter recovery time than surgery that preserves the uterus for women still planning to have children.

About Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear in women during childbearing years. Composed of muscle and fibrous tissue, fibroids range in size from a tiny seed to a large melon, and are completely unrelated to cancer. Fibroids are benign and very common, but many women never experience symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can significantly impact your quality of life — causing pressure and pain, heavy or painful menstrual periods, frequent urination, and sometimes even infertility or complications with pregnancy.

About Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
Uterine fibroid embolization, also known as UFE, is an outpatient procedure performed at all Preferred Vascular Group locations by our trained and compassionate interventional radiologists and vascular physicians. During UFE, a catheter is inserted through a small incision in the groin or wrist and guided into the uterine arteries. Tiny particles are released to block the vessels feeding the fibroids. Without blood flow, the fibroids gradually shrink and symptoms improve.
UFE offers fewer complications than open surgery, a short recovery period of just one to two weeks on average, and preservation of the uterus. Studies have shown that the majority of women experience significant symptom relief after the UFE procedure.
